DTS-5000-56S Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the DTS-5000-56S fit in a data center network?

The DTS-5000-56S supports leaf, top-of-rack and aggregation deployments. Its 48 SFP28 ports support connections at up to 25GbE for servers, storage and other network equipment. Eight QSFP28 uplink ports support connections at up to 100GbE to spine and aggregation switches.

What is pre-installed, and what does ONIE provide?

ONIE is pre-installed to enable installation of a supported SONiC network operating system. ONIE provides the installation environment; the installed network operating system provides switching, routing and management functions. Use a SONiC image validated for this hardware platform.

Which routing and fabric features are supported?

Specified capabilities include BGP for IPv4 and IPv6, OSPF, IS-IS, ECMP multipath forwarding, EVPN/VXLAN overlays and MC-LAG for redundant connections. Feature availability depends on the supported SONiC release and configuration.

Does the switch support RoCEv2 and congestion management?

Specified capabilities include RoCEv2, IEEE 802.1Qbb Priority-Based Flow Control (PFC) and Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN). RoCEv2 deployment requires compatible endpoints and coordinated network configuration. End-to-end behavior depends on the adapters, software, traffic priorities and congestion settings across the network.

How can I configure the switch and monitor traffic?

CLI and REST API support configuration and integration with management tools. sFlow provides sampled traffic visibility for an external collector. Available commands, API functions and monitoring capabilities depend on the supported software release.

Are dedicated management and console ports provided?

Yes. The switch includes a dedicated RJ-45 management port supporting connections at up to 1GbE, an RJ-45 console port for CLI access and a USB 2.0 Type-A port. These are separate from the SFP28 and QSFP28 data ports.

Are transceivers included with the switch?

Transceivers are sold separately. Order compatible SFP28 transceivers for 25GbE connections and QSFP28 transceivers for 100GbE uplinks. Select the model according to your fiber type, connector and required distance. The transceiver comparison below lists the featured options.

Which transceivers are listed for this switch?

Select the optical module according to the required speed, fiber type, connector and link distance.

Model Port Type Fiber / Connector Supported Reach
DEM-25G-S28-3SR 25GbE SFP28 Multimode / Duplex LC Up to 100 m
DEM-25G-S28-3DR 25GbE SFP28 Single-mode / Duplex LC Up to 500 m
DEM-100G-Q28-1SR4 100GbE QSFP28 Multimode
Connector: Contact D-Link
Up to 100 m
DEM-100G-Q28-1DR1 100GbE QSFP28 Single-mode / Duplex LC Up to 500 m

Actual reach depends on the selected module, fiber type and complete optical link, including connector and patch-panel losses. Transceivers sold separately.

What is the downlink-to-uplink bandwidth ratio?

The 48 server-facing ports provide up to 1.2 Tbps of aggregate capacity, while the eight uplink ports provide up to 800 Gbps. With all ports operating at their stated maximum speeds and all eight ports used as uplinks, the theoretical downlink-to-uplink ratio is 1.5:1. Using fewer uplinks changes that ratio.

Why are both 2 Tbps and 4 Tbps listed for switching capacity?

They describe the same capacity using different counting conventions: up to 2 Tbps, or up to 4 Tbps full duplex when transmit and receive capacity are counted together. The figures are not additive. The specified packet forwarding rate is up to 2,800 Mpps. Actual throughput depends on traffic patterns, configuration and connected equipment.

What power supplies and fans are included?

The switch includes two hot-swappable power supplies with 1+1 redundancy and four hot-swappable fans with N+1 redundancy. Both power supplies must be powered for power-supply redundancy. Follow the applicable hardware documentation when replacing components.

What rack, airflow and environmental requirements should I plan for?

The switch occupies 1RU in a 19-inch rack and measures 17.32 × 18.50 × 1.73 inches (440 × 470 × 44 mm). Airflow is front-to-back. The specified operating temperature is 32–113°F (0–45°C), and power consumption is up to 312.6 W. Allow clearance for cabling, ventilation and access to replaceable components.
